A Farmer in His Wagon (Troyon, Constant)

Well, the gentleman driving this wagon is definitely not as young and handsome as the fellow driving his aunt’s donkey carriage in chapter 12 of Protecting Miss Darcy. 😉

~*~*~

They stepped to the side to allow a donkey carriage to enter Longbourn’s driveway ahead of them, but it did not. Instead, it came to a stop.

“Miss Lydia, Miss Kitty,” the handsome gentleman who drove the carriage said.

“Mr. Webb!” Lydia cried with delight. “We have not seen you in an age!”

“Indeed, it has been since last summer – very nearly a year.”

“And are you once again visiting your aunt?”

Leenie Brown fell in love with Jane Austen's works when she first read Sense and Sensibility followed immediately by Pride and Prejudice in her early teens. As the second of five daughters and an avid reader, she has always loved to see where her imagination takes her and to play with and write about the characters she meets along the way. In 2013, these two loves collided when she stumbled upon the world of Jane Austen Fan Fiction. A year later, in 2014, she began writing her own Austen-inspired stories and began publishing them in 2015. Leenie lives in Nova Scotia, Canada with her two teenage boys and her very own Mr. Brown (a wonderful mix of all the best of Darcy, Bingley and Edmund with healthy dose of the teasing Mr. Tillney and just a dash of the scolding Mr. Knightley).

  1. That is a beautiful snapshot of a farmer and his wagon. However, he seems too dressed up to be working. Is he going to church, an assembly, or calling on a certain lady friend? Oh, the possibilities. Thanks for sharing this picture and the short excerpt. Blessings and stay safe and healthy.

    1. In our story, the driver is on his way to Meryton to pick up a order for his aunt, whom he is visiting as is his usual practice each summer. 🙂 I have not idea what the guy in the painting is doing, but he could be going to town. Maybe he’s picking up a visitor who just arrived at the inn. (The painting kind of makes me think Matthew from Anne of Green Gables when he’s going to collect Anne)

  2. Since Mr. Webb has an estate or will inherit one, it stands to reason that he is the son of a gentleman. Therefore, he would wear a gentleman’s clothing. Even Darcy drives carts and helps out when necessary. He would wear older clothes, but they would still be the clothes of a gentleman.
