Courtship (Edmund Blair Leighton)

Do you remember how Persuading Miss Mary ended with Kitty and Lorcan being discovered kissing in the music room? Well, Kitty, who loves music, has not been able to enjoy playing nearly as much as she did before that fateful day and could not bring herself to play the piece of music she had been playing on that day — until now when there is a possible courtship on the horizon.

Mary,

When you are sharing all that Jane has written with our sisters, would you be so kind as to share my eager anticipation of Georgiana’s arrival with her? There is so much I wish to discuss with her. Also, tell her that I have promised myself to practice our duet most faithfully until her arrival.

Give my love to my sisters. It will be lovely for us all to be together again.

Kitty

Leenie Brown fell in love with Jane Austen's works when she first read Sense and Sensibility followed immediately by Pride and Prejudice in her early teens. As the second of five daughters and an avid reader, she has always loved to see where her imagination takes her and to play with and write about the characters she meets along the way. In 2013, these two loves collided when she stumbled upon the world of Jane Austen Fan Fiction. A year later, in 2014, she began writing her own Austen-inspired stories and began publishing them in 2015. Leenie lives in Nova Scotia, Canada with her two teenage boys and her very own Mr. Brown (a wonderful mix of all the best of Darcy, Bingley and Edmund with healthy dose of the teasing Mr. Tillney and just a dash of the scolding Mr. Knightley).

  1. Oh, we are winding down to a confrontation. Will Georgiana be vexed with Kitty for denying herself love just to keep her promise to her? How will she respond? This shall be interesting. I can’t wait to see what happens. That is an amazing picture. What a find.

  2. What a pensive look that man has in the painting. I’ll have to look the artist up, (big surprise ;)) but in this image you barely see anything of his clothing or figure, it’s all about that look he’s bestowing upon the woman. And he looks very interested. Like he really hadn’t noticed her before now, and maybe doesn’t understand his own curiosity yet. Hmmmm, lovely.

I may find other views of the same painting out there with less of a darkened background. That’s why I stated the whole looking it up business. I like it just the way it is, though. Don’t you??

    1. I love it. I thought it kind of went with this story because to me it’s like he’s there but yet not. Almost like he’s part of what she is imagining as she plays. I like that he is hidden as that gives room to imagine different scenarios and interpretations.

    2. Okay, I looked him up. Oh my goodness. How many images did I recognize!! And so many of them have been used as book covers in JAFF. He’s now a favorite of mine too. It’s like having a weekly art appreciation class. 😀 Thank you again Leenie.

  3. Wow! I must really be tired! I had to go back and review the picture because I didn’t notice the man. What is the promise that Kitty made to Georgina?

    1. He’s well hidden if you dont look at the picture at the right angle. Kitty promised to help Georgiana through her first season because Georgiana is unsure of her ability to judge the character of a gentleman. (Thank you, Wickham.)
